Buy the game, all you need is one expansion to get you off the level lock. If you are free to play you will be forced to see one area until you level up. Trust me this will not help you enjoy the game. Lucky for you, you have two choices buy the collection which is cheaper or buy path of fire which comes with heart of thorns for free.

If you're leveling to 80, don't worry about your build too much. You can change it later on any time at no cost. The exotic gear is easy to get at 80 as well. Ascended is the top end gear, but you don't need that right off the bat and can work towards that if you want to do fractals/raids. Try out all the different weapons, get to know your class.
GW2 is an MMO and the big four MMOs are WoW, FF14, GW2, and ESO. WoW and FF14 are the older tab-targetting style, whereas ESO has action combat like GW2. Be warned though that it's nowhere near as smooth as GW2's and I personally hate it. The classes also don't feel anywhere near as distinct. Either way, whenever someone is looking for an MMO
